Near the Coast
This painting was voted one of the three best pictures in the Prize Fund Exhibition held in New York in 1885 by the American Art Association. Gifford was awarded a $2,500 cash prize and the painting was given to the Museum. It was later included among several works by the artist at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. This bleak coastal scene was apparently inspired by the area near New Bedford, Massachusetts, where Gifford had his summer studio.
