Mrs. Jacob Hurd and Child
Margaret Brown of Boston married Jacob Hurd in 1760. This portrait and its companion (64.114.1) were probably painted during a trip to Boston a few years later. The child is probably the Hurd's son Jacob, said to have been born about 1762. Although this painting was obviously influenced by both John Singleton Copley and John Smibert, the attribution to Johnston is securely based on this portrait's stylistic similarities to the portraits of Dr. Hall Jackson (Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts) and Mrs. Ralph Isaacs (New London County Historical Society, New London, Connecticut).
