Louise
This painting is unique among Jongers' portraits by virtue of its relative informality. It seems to partake of the tradition of painting a standing female accompanied by accessories, including a pet, and set against an extremely simple background. Similar works that Jongers might have known include examples by Manet, Sargent, and Whistler. In handling, it is most reminiscent of the work of Sargent. The sitter is probably Louise McAllister Young, the artist's stepdaughter. The precise date of execution is not known, although the style of the costume of the girl coupled with the first exhibition of the work at the National Academy of Design in December 1909 suggests that it was painted in 1908 or 1909.
