The sitter (1780-1844) was the daughter of William Paterson, second governor of New Jersey and associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1793 to 1806. On May 17, 1802, she became the second wife of Congressman Stephen Van Rensselaer III of Albany. Robert Fulton (q.v.) also portrayed her.
