Sleeping Child, possibly Violet Sargent
The child represented in this delicate graphite sketch may be the artist's sister Violet. A date of about 1872–73 is consistent with the apparent age of the child depicted—if the subject is indeed Violet—and with Sargent's graphic style at that time. Sargent's mother gave birth to six children, of whom only three survived to adulthood: John Singer, Emily, and Violet.
