Sargent abandoned this composition before completing it, creating a droll juxtaposition between the unfinished face of the woman and the more detailed and very charming likeness of the dog. With characteristic fluidity, Sargent suggests the dog’s soft fur and big pink tongue with just a few brushstrokes.
