Master Billy Fahnestock

Janet Scudder American

Not on view

In addition to whimsical garden and fountain figures, Scudder is known for her portraits of children. This medallion features a full-length portrait of a young boy, seated in left-facing profile. Scudder depicts Master Fahnestock wearing a sailor-style hat, holding a toy elephant, and dangling his left leg—all of which signal the sitter’s youthful innocence. A decorative border consists of tiny children’s toys.
