Trained at the National Academy of Design in New York and the Académie Julian in Paris, Goddard won recognition early in his career with a series of bronze bas-relief portraits of contemporary writers, including Alfred Tennyson (1809-92). Tennyson was the Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland for over 40 years during Queen Victoria’s reign.
