Celia Thaxter's Garden, Isles of Shoals, Maine
During the 1890s Hassam summered on Appledore, the largest in a group of islands called the Isles of Shoals, located ten miles east of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The sumptuous wildflower garden cultivated by Hassam’s friend Celia Thaxter, a poet and amateur artist, provided an enticing contrast to the island’s rugged terrain, attracting many landscape painters. In this work, vibrant red poppies entangled in lush green foliage introduce a view of sun-bleached Babb’s Rock. Hassam omitted the large hotel owned and operated by Thaxter’s family—a vibrant gathering spot for the community of artists who visited annually.
