Syrian Man

1905–6
Not on view
After 1900, Sargent traveled often to conduct research for his mural project but also for pleasure and inspiration. He was fascinated by the people and monuments he encountered, and seems to have drawn and painted constantly. In this sketch, made in Syria, he suggests the model’s flowing cloak and striped suit with a rapid linear style.
