Vase

Manufacturer Ott and Brewer American
ca. 1885–90
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
Made of Belleek, a type of Irish porcelain prized for its translucency, and decorated in an orientalist-style after an English manufacturer, this vase exemplifies the eclectic inspirations for nineteenth-century American art pottery and porcelain. Its "mazarine" blue ground recalls the signature wares produced by the Royal Worcester factory in England, while its chrysanthemum decoration and pierced handles demonstrate inspiration taken from Asian and Islamic sources.
