Side chair
Many Massachusetts chairs in the so-called Chippendale style seem to have been inspired by Robert Manwaring’s "Cabinet and Chair-Maker’s Real Friend and Companion" (1765) rather than by the designs of Thomas Chippendale himself. For instance, the splat outline of this richly carved chair follows plate 9 in Manwaring’s guide.
