Side Chair

1840–50
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
The design for this side chair is a rather unusual combination of mid-century furniture styles. The cresting and arches below the seat rail are typical Gothic details and the spiral twist front legs and rear stiles are associated with the concurrent revival of Elizabethan forms.
