Tiffany Studios designed this Renaissance-revival dining room for “A. M. Mitchell, Esq.” At the turn of the twentieth century, when this drawing was created, the Victorian practice of gendering interior design was still common. Rooms such as the library, study, or dining room were often designated as masculine spaces, employing heavy forms and dark colors. The hunting motif was thought appropriate for a dining room, in which the man’s metaphorical spoils were enjoyed. In this design, the hunting trophy above the hearth signals this architectural element as the focal point of this baronial room.
