This gold memorial ring features a rippling banner in which the inscription, "GERTE. [possibly an H]. TEN. EYCK. OB. 21. DEC.1773. AE. 61" is engraved. Scrolled elements punctuate the contours, lending energy and decorative interest to the delicate gold band. Gerte’s identity has not yet been determined. The Ten Eyck family of Albany included accomplished silversmiths Jacob and Barent Ten Eyck. It is likely one of them made this ring on the occasion of their relative’s death. The practice of presenting mourners with a ring suggests several of such rings might have been made.
