Memorial Brooch
Featuring a delicate, deftly rendered watercolor on ivory depicting a neoclassical style funerary urn, this brooch memorializes the Salem, Massachusetts, merchant Francis Cabot, who died in 1786. The gold lettering in the enameled frame reads, "FRANCIS • CABOT • ESQ • / OB: 12 • APR:1786 • AE:69." The curved surface of its underside suggests the brooch might have once been a ring.
