Jugs ornamented with heraldic animals were very popular and were widespread; the shape of this one is typically Tuscan. Examples like this were traded extensively and one is represented in the famous Merode Triptych, painted in the Netherlands around 1430 and currently on view at the Cloisters (see metmuseum.org/collections).
