Beach Scene

Lockwood de Forest American

Not on view

De Forest is best known as a pioneering champion of South Asian design influences in his decorative work. He also pursued painting, studying with his great-uncle Frederic Edwin Church, and emulating his fascination with diverse light effects. De Forest’s oil landscape sketches, almost all completed in single sittings, serve as a visual diary of his travels to Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, and throughout North America. “Beach Scene,” dated August 17, 1877, was completed in the eastern United States. In this loosely painted view, the artist rendered weighty gray clouds yielding to clear skies beyond, recording the impact of weather conditions on land and water.
