Half Set (brooch and earrings)

Edward A. Tyler American

Not on view

These earrings belong to a demi-parure that also includes a matching brooch (2001.232.1). Gold balls decorated with stippling and geometric black enamel dangle from matching studs and are further embellished by a scalloped border. The demi-parure retains its original brown leather case with maroon satin and velvet interior. The inner lid of the case is stamped in gold "E.A. Tyler/ 15 Canal St. / NEW Orleans" with an eagle holding a watch in its beak.

Boston-trained jeweler Edward A. Tyler relocated in 1838 to New Orleans, where he established a successful business. In 1866 he won a gold medal at the Louisiana State Fair for his "chaste and elegant designs of home-made jewelry, manufactured in his own establishment."
