Admiral de Tourville (1642–1701)

Joseph-Charles Marin French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 552

The restoration monarchy of Louis XVIII commissioned from leading sculptors a series of colossal marble statues of past royalist luminaries to line the Pont de la Concorde in Paris. That of Tourville, a dashing naval hero under Louis XIV, now stands before the town hall of his birthplace, Tourville-sur-Sienne.
