Patched strip of red, yellow and white lampas silk; possibly originally part of a chasuble
Not on view
With its ornate and intricate knotwork patterning- still discernable despite surface losses- this textile is an evocative survival of Spanish, sixteenth-century weaving. When this strip was first part of The Met's collection, it was attached to two additional fragments of the same textile (17.29.16a) and assembled to imitate the front of a liturgical garment (as revealed in black-and-white photography). This was probably an early twentieth-century construction created by dealers to make the fragments more saleable.
