Daybed

1740–90
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This is a classical example of the New England cabriole leg couch. While the origin of this uncommon form cannot be narrowly localized, this couch appears to be from Newport. The shape of the knees and size of the pad feet match features on a documented Newport easy chair, 50.228.3. Certain features, such as the outline of the baluster splat, suggest an attribution to the Rhode Island cabinetmaker Job Townsend.
