Obverse and reverse, satyr and maenad
Falerii Veteres (modern Civita Castellana) was the home of a very active pottery workshop beginning about 380 and continuing throughout the rest of the fourth century B.C. It supplied vases, especially large banquet shapes like the stamnos, to clients along the Tiber Valley. This stamnos depicts a favorite subject ultimately derived from Attic prototypes, satyrs cavorting with maenads.
