War Hat

Italian, Milan

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 374

Plain undecorated war hats were a common form of head defense during the Middle Ages and into the early sixteenth century. This helmet is extremely unusual for its late date and its rich decoration indicating that it was made for a nobleman of high rank.
