Left Leg Defense (Greave)

Turkish, Istanbul (?)

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 379

This left leg guard, along with a right leg guard also in the Metropolitan Museum's collection (acc. no. 36.25.457), forms the only known matching pair of mail-and-plate guards of the fifteenth century for the lower legs. Similar floral ornament and Arabic inscriptions also are found on turban helmets.
