Terracotta neck-amphora (jar) with twisted handles

Attributed to the Matsch Painter

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Obverse, old man and warrior
Reverse, man leaning on staff

The vase depicts a warrior's departure. The representation on the obverse is particularly expressive, with the two figures presented as virtual mirror images—the older man leaning on his staff, the warrior holding his spear, and the two shafts crossing at the bottom.
