Cup and Saucer
The Verplancks allied with opposing sides during the Revolutionary War, Samuel with the Patriots and Judith with the Loyalists. When the British occupied Manhattan, Samuel left for upstate New York, but Judith remained in their house on Wall Street. These pieces are from a delicate porcelain tea service said to have been given to Judith Verplanck by Sir William Howe, commander in chief of the British forces in New York.
