Saddle (Kura)

Japanese

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 377

This appears to be the only known example of a Japanese saddle with both high relief carving and abalone shell inlaid in lacquer. Both the carving and the inlay are of very high quality, making this an extremely rare and important saddle.
