One of a matched pair of male and female figures representing protective spirits or ancestors, probably from Leti or Babar Island in eastern Indonesia. Each figure is carved from dark brown wood and seated on a thin base with the legs drawn in toward the body and the arms crossed with elbows resting on the knees. The hair of the female figure is shown gathered into a narrow coiled coiffure which projects backward from the crown of the head. Individual locks of hair and the overall coiled form of her coiffure are indicated by engraved lines. The eyes and mouth of both figures are indicated with incised lines while the ears and nose are prominent and carved in high relief. The arms and legs are slender and angular, evocative of distinct sections of the limbs, and the back tapers elegantly at the waist, giving each of these unique figures a highly distinctive profile when viewed in from the side and behind.
