Anastasius, a respected emperor, is presented in profile with his military successes emphasized by the image of Victory on the coin’s reverse. The inscription CONOB below her indicates that the coin was minted in Constantinople of pure gold. The standard Byzantine coin was a solidus. The semissis is half of a solidus.
