Study of a Draped Figure

Draftsman Edgar Degas French

Not on view

At first glance this drawing looks like a copy of a late fifteenth-century Italian painting, yet no direct source for it is known. The draped figure seems to be a study for Saint John the Baptist and the Angel, a painting for which Degas made many preparatory drawings. The richness of the drapery, with its nuanced shading and white gouache highlighting, may well have been based on the ancient statues that surrounded Degas in Italy at the time he made this work.
