A poet, art critic, and essayist, Allard served in the war between 1914 and 1917; he wrote many of these poems from the front while recovering from a 1916 injury. Drawing on traditional literary genres and contemporary events, he used the character of "a young artilleryman filled with nostalgia" to describe his experiences of suffering, fear, and longing. Dufy’s accompanying woodblock prints are based on correspondence with Allard.
