Luca da Leida, da molti ritenuto il principale artista olandese, deve la sua fama internazionale quasi esclusivamente al lavoro di incisore. Questo disegno è entrato di recente a far parte del repertorio dei disegni originali dell’ artista, ad oggi se ne contano circa trenta. Il foglio fa da complemento a quello di dimensioni e tecnica simili conservato nel Kupferstichkabinett, a Berlino, raffigurante la Vergine che alza lo sguardo sorpresa nell’ ascoltare il messaggio dell’ arcangelo. L’ artista anche qui ha abbinato la monumentalità della figura ad un ricco e sottile intreccio di linee, ombreggiature e tratteggi incrociati.
