Lotus

dated 1932
Not on view
Xiao settled in Shanghai after a career teaching in art colleges. He was fond of using a single large brush to execute all strokes in a painting, including the inscription. Here, his bold brushwork sensitively defines broad thin leaves curling in a rich, almost viscous space.
