Bontecou is best known for creating powerful wall relief sculptures made of welded steel frames and bolts of brown canvas, yet the graphic arts also occupy an important role in her oeuvre. In 1962, she made her first print after being invited by Tatyana Grosman to experiment at her print shop, Universal Limited Art Editions, Inc. (ULAE). Working in lithography, Bontecou titled her works to reflect her material—the stones used as a printing matrix—and the order in which the lithographs were made.
