George Eliot
After a small woodcut portrait (4.4 x 4.4 cm) that appears on the title page of George Eliot's 'Scenes from Adam Bede' (New York, Clark & Maynard, 1888). Sloan's portrait faces in the same direction and is virtually identical in detail and shading. However, because of the size difference, Sloan's must have been a freehand copy, see: Morse 1969, p. 23-5.
