In the catalogue of the Yerkes sale (1910), this painting was listed as coming from the collection of Horace Walpole at Strawberry Hill. However, in the catalogue of the Magniac sale (1892), no provenance is given for it, although many other works in this sale are described as from Strawberry Hill. It is possible that our picture was no. 40 in the Strawberry Hill sale (Robins, Strawberry Hill, May 17, 1842), "A Portrait of a Man in a black dress, of the time of Henry VIII, an undoubted painting by Holbein," sold to Brown for £11.11.0.
