Landscape with Figures (Les Bohémiens)
Camille Corot French
Not on view
At the age of seventy-six, Corot continued to paint from nature during his travels throughout France. He also produced invented studio landscapes such as this picture, in which the setting is animated by the presence of human figures. The artist evidently identified them as Bohémiens, a French term equivalent to "bohemians" but with an additional, more specific meaning: Roma people. Their itinerant way of life is complemented here by the transient sunset, sheltering trees, and tiny dashes of campfire.
