The Opium Smokers
In 1869, Clairin traveled to Morocco with the painter Henri Regnault and set up a studio with him in Tangier. The lassitude and otherworldliness that permeate this picture, painted three years later, were not limited to Clairin’s Middle Eastern scenes. He specialized in theatrical subjects of all types, notably figures luxuriating in well-appointed European interiors, including his friend, the actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923).
