Horse Trapping

Belts like these are known from the Indian state of Maharashtra, and are fabricated of double-braided silver wire, topped with floral rosettes on sliding bands. The belt is fastened by passing the large knob (ganth) through the loop (phandra) and it would rest around the waist of the wearer.

This jewel was formerly in the collection of Edward C. Moore (1827–1891) a visionary designer and silversmith at Tiffany & Co. A prolific collector, Moore actively amassed beautiful works of art from various cultures, which were used as inspiration in Tiffany designs.
