Mosque Lamp

Not on view

The decoration of this object is unusual for the presence of stylized mosque lamps depicted between the handles. The peonies inside the three medallions around its neck are instead more conventional. Designs of lamps were sometimes carved on tombstones to represent God's light in the afterworld. Therefore, it is possible that this lamp was once suspended in the mausoleum of an anonymous Mamluk emir.
