Animal-Shaped Spit Rest

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 453

Made of fire-resistant stone, this object has been identified as a spit rest. Two such rests would have been placed on either side of an underground hearth, a feature found in buildings throughout Nishapur.
