Bracelet, One of a Pair
Not on view
The domed ornaments on this bracelet are reminiscent of jewelry made by the Kabyle people in northern Algeria, but the generous use of filigree suggests it may have been made elsewhere. Heavy bracelets, such as this one, were an important part of a woman’s dowry, and served as portable wealth, which could be sold if the need arose. Red coral is commonly found in Amazigh (Berber) jewelry across North Africa, though imitation gems in glass or plastic are also common substitutes for precious stones.
