Rose Mallow (Fuyō)
Katsukawa Shunshō 勝川春章 Japanese
Not on view
Rose mallow (fuyō) and kerria (yamabuki) frame a ukiyo-e-style painting of a woman in court dress, her classic beauty as much a part of Japanese culture as that of the flowers. At his best, Shunshō, an Edo bon vivant, paired timelessness with an up-to-date sensibility. His works, both paintings and woodblock prints, were greatly admired in the artistic circles of his day.
