Fragment of a Luster Bowl with a Peacock

This stonepaste bowl attributed to Egypt bears an image of a luster-painted peacock set against patterns of revolving scrolls. Foliated epigraphic medallions constitute the contours of the bird’s voluminous tail echoing the scrolling vegetal forms of the background. The exterior of the bowl, as well as the underside of the base, are fully glazed and painted with large and simple roundels.

The 10th and early 11th centuries were a period of experimentation with different ceramic bodies in Egypt, which likely led to the development of the new medium of stonepaste in the region.
