Woman and Child
Utamaro composed this image with considerable skill and humor, creating a circuit of gazes and gestures. Mother and child are simultaneously involved in multiple activities. She arranges her hair before a mirror stand and nurses her baby, while he suckles, pinches her other nipple, and reaches for a toy offered by another woman.
