Issued at Nishapur by the Seljuq governor Sanjar, this gold dirham has an inscription on its obverse naming Sanjar and listing the titles and name of his brother, the Seljuq sultan Abu Shujaʿ Muhammad. A crescent-shaped margin quotes verses 33:9 and 9:61 of the Qur’an. The same format is repeated on the obverse, which bears the shahada and the name of the Abbasid caliph al-Mustazahir billah; the margin indicates the date and location of the coin’s minting.
