The Painter's Studio
Henry-Bonaventure Monnier French
Not on view
Monnier scrutinized the life of the French bourgeoisie through his work as a caricaturist, lithographer, actor, and writer. A notorious prankster and humorist, he created satirical portraits of the Parisian middle class for popular albums and journals. This drawing is characteristic of Monnier’s treatment of the trades and vocations of the day. The studio is cluttered with the various objects related to the painter’s practice, while the diminutive artist sits, palette in hand, in front of a fresh canvas.
