Dirk Van Erp American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 743

Dirk Van Erp was one of the most important metalworkers in California during the Arts and Crafts period. He was especially well known for his table lamps, of which this is a particularly fine example—in excellent condition and retaining its original patina. The warm orange of the mica shade complements the lamp's hand-hammered, baluster-shaped copper base in rich reddish brown. Lamps such as this one were ideally suited to Arts and Crafts interiors, furnished with geometric oak furniture similar in hue and simplicity of form.
