Bigot, famous for his architectural ceramics, left his position as professor of chemistry to experiment with pottery after seeing Chinese and Japanese ceramics at the Paris Exposition of 1889. The dramatic streaks in the glazes covering this bowl reflect his study of Asian traditions.
